FOCUS OF BOFWA
The Botswana Family Welfare Association (BOFWA), was founded in September 1988, following a recommendation made at a seminar jointly held by the Botswana Government, World Bank and IPPF, attended by local NGO's and Government Officials. The Association was legally registered in June 19989. BOFWA provides information and services on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). This approach appears necessary based on the current statistics of teenage pregnancy, HIV infection and AIDS cases in Botswana. The approach specifically targets young people who are vulnerable to HIV infection due to unprotected sex which also leads to unplanned pregnancy which comes with psychological, social and physical consequences. BOFWA believes that knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health and access to such services are fundamental human rights. BOFWA also believes that a balance between the population of the world, its natural resources and productivity is a necessary condition for human happiness prosperity and peace. BOFWA's objectives include:
The operations of the Association are carried out by staff and volunteers. The staff structure is headed by the Executive Director who manages, organises, plans and directs the entire programmes with Assistance from the Programes Manager. STAFF PROFILES
BOFWA Volunteers The Volunteer structure is headed by the Association's President. The volunteers formulate policies and youth development complement staff at all levels. BOFWA Volunteers are registered members of the Association and support the Association by freely imparting their time and talent to implement SRH services for Batswana. BOFWA volunteers are important to the Association in terms of expanding ORH to different target groups in the community. The Association creates unique opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to serve and help each other. In support of BOFWA's services and goals, volunteers reach-out to identify the interests and needs of their communities by working with BOFWA staff members to meet BOFWA's objectives. Volunteers make it possible for paid staff to extend their services to more people in need. NEW VOLUNTEERS New Volunteers help to create awareness of issues in their communities by;
Volunteers can influence public policy and should work to improve peoples' lives by contributing to important services like "Family Life Education" for teenagers.
