FOREWORD

"Any reasonable woman and man who adds up the figures will understand the bottom line - if we do not invest infamily planning now, then we will not only bankrupt the future of the developing nations but of the global socio-economic fabric. And it is a choice which must define family planning at both the macro level - (the plocies of governments) and at the micro level (the action of families and of individuals)".   (Mahler 1992 IPPF Members Assembly).

The Botswana Family Welfare Association (BOFWA) was founded in 1988 with the im of creating awareness and providing education and family planning services mainly - but not only - to the youth of Botswana.

Today (1999), BOFWA is to celebrate eleven years of existence. The eleven years were characterised by rapid growth of the Association's programme and projects country wide.  This growth has brought with it the problems of leadership, management and directing/focusing the Association's programme.  To these were added problems of donor threats to reduce funding the Association's activities.   These have presented a clear challenge for BOFWA to formulate and implement a clear mission and strategies that could sustain its operations.

These challenges have also came at a time when the International Planned Parenthood Federation required its member Family Planning Associations to prepare and produce their long term plans (strategic plans).  This was a resolution adopted at IPPF's Members Assembly in 1992 in New Delhi, India.  Again the strategic plan is to take into consideration the ICPD and Beijing Platforms of Action in relation to sexual and Reproductive Health.

BOFWA, believing that the future of IPPF, FPAs depends on well planned, well managed programmes and sustainable use of resources; and also on how best we devise strategies to meet sexual and reproductive health challenges, unmet needs and priority choices; embarked on its first long term plan (Stretegic plan) for the period 1997-2002.

It must be noted here that once again, the significance of cooperation, collaboration and commitment have been demonstrated in the preperation and production of BOFWA's Strategic Plan.  It is my/our sincere hope that this document will receive a wide readership and that the Association will recieve unwavering support as well as feedback.
